Real World: Tyara Hooks (INFJ)

(Photo: Stop Being Polite)

Tyara “Tya” Hooks is a college student from both England and the United States. She has a hard time making friends, so she joined the cast to challenge herself. On this season of Real World, the cast members don’t know that they’ll be joined by their enemies. Tyara’s enemy, Kimberly, used to bully her in high school.

Tyara’s actions and relationships align with the personality type INFJ. Highlighted below are the cognitive functions related to this type. An evaluation of those functions in action follows.

Dominant Ni types (INFJ, INTJ) naturally find the deeper meaning of information. They think about the future implications when making decisions (Personality Max).

On the first day, Tyara’s housemate Katrina comments that she seems mature for her age. Tyara responds by describing herself as an old soul. This term refers to people who care little about appearances and value meaningful relationships. Such people have characteristics that align with dominant Ni types. They see the big picture and choose their experiences wisely (Loner Wolf).

Tyara says that when she thinks of fire, she thinks of passion. At the beach bonfire, she has the housemates record their passions on paper and throw them into the fire. Tyara wants this demonstration to symbolize their passions growing. Dominant Ni types enjoy the physical manifestation of their ideas because it brings their intuition to life. Many INFJs are writers, musicians, and visual artists (Udemy).

Auxiliary Fe types (INFJ, ISFJ) apply their dominant perceiving function to the happiness of those around them. INFJs use their dominant Ni to propose creative solutions to personal problems (Truity Psychometrics).

Tyara could sense that the game of truth-or-dare would become troublesome. She had to walk away from it because she felt so uncomfortable. And sure enough, Tyara’s housemate Robbie starts a fight over being peer-pressured to complete a dare. She uses his outburst to exemplify why she didn’t want to play the game at all. Here Tyara identified the (Ni) future implications of the situation and applied them to the feelings of the group.

Tyara doesn’t cite her personal experience as a reason for disliking Kimberly. She instead says, “My issue with Kim is that she deals with her insecurities by bullying other people.” Ni and Fe provide INFJs with insights about other people's behavior, which makes them very emotionally intelligent. INFJs try to understand people who hurt them instead of assuming the worst (Thought Catalog).

Tertiary Ti types (INFJ, ISFJ) strive to find a logical basis for their judgements. But at age 21, Tyara possesses an underdeveloped Ti. She responds poorly to criticism and negative feedback because she defaults to her Ni and Fe, which take things personally (Myers and Briggs). Three events demonstrate Tyara’s resistance to Ti development:

Event: She overhears her housemate Jordan say that she wishes Tyara would participate more.
Response: Tyara yells at all the housemates for “talking [trash].”

Event: The housemates unknowingly leave her alone in a nightclub.
Response: Tyara assumes that they left her because they don’t like her.

Event: Her housemate Theo admits that he wants to date her but struggles with her (Ni + Fe) hypersensitivity.
Response: Tyara feels like it’s a personal attack and walks out of the room mid-conversation.

But once the housemates get to know Tyara, hardly anyone complains about her. They learn that she’s a good person who just “puts up a front to protect herself.” This unnecessary defense mechanism further demonstrates how illogical she can be (Cognitive Function Theory).

Inferior Se types (INFJ, INTJ) have a very limited awareness of their external environment. They dislike chaos and become self-indulgent in times of stress (Hipster INTJ).

Despite being a military brat, Tyara feels overwhelmed by new surroundings. She went on Real World specifically to overcome this aversion. Tyara instantly latches onto Theo because he “loosens her up” and makes her feel comfortable around the others. INFJs need significant alone or one-on-one time in order to stay sane, which Theo provides for her (Jennifer Soldner).

Tyara engages in sensory indulges, like overeating or overdrinking, in response to the stressful Real World. She goes to nightclubs with her housemates until 2 a.m. Tyara steps out to get comfort food as Theo’s discussing their problems. INFJs act this way because their lack of command over the physical world makes them vulnerable to immediate gratification (The INFJ Cafe).

Did You Know?
A lot of MBTI bloggers are INFJs! Here are some of my favorites:
